So I recently did a spell to encourage communication that involved leaving salt water in a cup until it evaporates. However, I also have been battling a fruit fly infestation and unfortunately had a few get into the water and die.
I don't feel like there's metaphysical significance to this because I was already dealing with the pests but have been debating whether or not I need to redo the spell (a positive invitation for contact could theoretically be affected by death right?) but considering it's halfway it'd be a bit inconvenient. Thoughts on whether you think I should redo the spell or how/if it's affected by the bugs?
Also was wondering what people's thoughts are on this kind of thing i.e. when the less glamorous/mundane realties muddies up one's practice.

I try to never look at any situation as something interfering. While at the time and in the moment it may feel like an interruption or bad luck, I try my best (and sometimes it is not easy) to think that this cause of events all is happening for a greater picture that I just can't see yet. While the fils are insignificant in my option, just a small casualty in an otherwise harmless practice, I wouldn't restart this process for that reason. It really comes down to your intentions. In reality you don't even need the water or salt, just your own thoughts and intentions can formulate this fulfillment, but many (like me) find comfort in carrying out a ritual in aiding them in making clear the intention they want. I think you should be fine letting it carry itself out.

All living beings possess energy. If something dies on your spell, it definitely projects some energy that may hinder the spell. You can look at it like that - you do a spell for communication and something dies on it, symbolically and energetically, it's like the death of the communication.
That being said, panicking over it and thinking that your spell won't work isn't smart either, as it can hinder the manifestation of the spell as well.
I would suggest you to play safe. Cleanse the area, be sorry to the earth for the loss of one of its living beings and give an offering to compensate for that. Also make sure to get rid of the remnants of the spell either in the crossroads or in running water in order to make sure to wash out any negative influence it may have caused, and then after a few days recast the spell in a safe environment.

The death of a few fruit flies is nothing to get upset about even in conjunction with spell work. Fruit flies have 4 genes and are fast replicating beings since they only live for a few weeks, this means they are great for studying basic genetics. Think of this way you have a few fruit flies sacrifice their lives for your spell for communication and the symbology you place upon their death is important because it will shape the results of your magical working. As Kaurora stated you don't necessarily need to have the salt, water, or fruit flies because it's more about your intent and thought processes. Due to my experiences with the magic of life and how I see things these basic genetic beings with short life spans gave to your casting energy that represents a short time (their lifespan) of basic communication in this instance (genetics is a code or communication). Now some would view this as a negative thing, but I see it as a stepping stone. The time you receive in conjunction with better basic communication may be enough to get you started down the path. Casting again may give you another boost once this one wears off. It's common to repeat castings or similar ones. The biggest key though is following up with what is often though of as mundane actions such as how you speak, but keep in mind that how you speak is an art and practice all itself and changing how you speak will influence those who are hopefully hearing and listening to you. Last thought,it's always helps to be grateful to the gods for providing that which you need to continue to live and thrive. Gratitude is important in all aspects so be sure to include some for the fruit flies in some form.
