Do spells come w a cost

Okay so I casted two healing spells for a friend yesterday to protect her unborn baby(she was having spotting). I was told by someone every spell casted even if it is to help somebody, comes with a cost or negative effect to the one who casted it. Is this true and can anyone more experienced explain this to me? I am a beginner those were my first spells.

The only time a spell debatably comes with a cost is when performing one with negative intent. However, this is more in terms of if one believes in karma and the threefold law. In that belief, the energy/magick you send out is what will return to you through various forces of nature. The only negative consequence you may feel from a spell being cast is being slightly drained, but this is because energy is being placed towards manifesting your desired results.

I think it's relative to how you define "cost." You would have to raise enough energy and put energy into the spell to make it effective. If you can raise energy effectively it might drain you a little but it shouldn't have a big effect.

As far as karmic cost, if you are directing the energy in a positive or productive way there shouldn't be any rebound negative effect. As other people have mentioned when you try to turn the energy against someone it can come back on you (especially if you don't shore up your defenses and take precautions). I wouldn't attempt any kind of baneful magic against someone if you aren't already adept at cleansing, banishing and protecting yourself, otherwise you have limited defenses. Just my personal opinion tho.
