What are the Runes?(1)
Runes are the ancient alphabetical writing of the Scandinavians. Each letter has its own individual meaning and magical purpose. They appear many times in Norse Mythology. One of the earliest of inscriptions is known as the Meldorf Brooch. Its located in northern Germany. Scholars today still debate about its origins of being either Runic or Roman. In this article, our main focus will be the Elder Futhark Runes
What are the runes roles in the Lore?(1)
The runes make a big appearance in Scandinavian Mythology. In the lore, it is said that Odin Alfather, the Chief of the Aesir Tribe, Hung from a tree for nine days and discovered the runes. A tale of it is told in the form of poetry in the Havamal. It is called The Sayings of the High One.
I know that I hung
On the wind-blasted tree
All of nights nine,
Pierced by my spear
And given to Odin,
Myself sacrificed to myself
On that pole
Of which none know
Where its roots run.
No aid I received
Not even a sip from the horn
Peering down,
I took up the runes -
Screaming I grasped them -
Then I fell back from there.
Basically what happened was that Odin hung from the cosmic tree, Yggdrasil. While fasting for nine days, he peering down into the well of Urd and sacrificed himself to himself.
What are runes used for?(2)
Runes are commonly used for divination and shamanic purposes. For example, you have your rune set, commonly in a bag. What you could do is a rune-casting whereas youd reach into the back and grab a handful of runes and cast them out onto a white cloth. You would then read the runes. Commonly, they would be read from inward to outward. Inward being the past or present, and outward, being the future. Alternatively, you could draw the runes as you would draw a tarot spread. For example, if youre doing a Past, Present, Future spread, you would pull out one rune at a time, each one standing for the past, one for the present, and one for the future.
