Hi Cody. Before you attempt to do any kind of magic, I would suggest that you first learn your basics. Meditation, visualization, and centering.

Check out our "Newbies" section. It will help you out with learning the basics.

Hey, welcome to the site. In order to do any type of magic, you have to learn basics, from these basics later on you can turn into any path of magic you wish.

For clear understanding on basics, and for an easy structure to understand when starting out most would suggest Wicca, from there you can branch out in any direction. Also books on Wicca are rather easy to come by since it is becoming a more recognizable religion and socially accepted practice. Most books on general Wicca will cover all your basics and often in a step by step format. ;)

Suggesting Wicca is suggesting a religion. Wiccan books do have a lot on basic magic, but most is from a wiccan religious perspective. Wicca as a religion should not be approached do to magical needs, it should be seen as a serious religious structure of beliefs. I just want to point this out since, this person asks for magic basics but does not affiliate himself in the search of dogma, as to not confuse this person with Wicca.

Tips.

-Start with Meditation
-Practice Visualization
-And read read read. Before any magic takes place you must know your craft :)

I found that books are the most useful when starting out on a magickal journey. The book I found most useful is The Secrets of High Magic (Francis Melville). I am a practitioner of high magick though so this explains the recommendation.

However, it's truly up to the individual. I have found an online 'hogwarts' as well. Will be interested to sign in soon :)
