Why are some spellcasters able to take different form in the astral plane?

Can human spirits and souls change form when outside the body as a part of magic or is it something else?

really any soul can change their form when out of the body. sometimes for magical reasons, sometimes not.

I believe anybody can transform their soul into anything with using the art of ritual and the right mind set. As they say "Where ever attention goes energy will flow." Another reason why someone could take form into something else is what they are attach to or holding onto that belief.
