i actually believe prayer and spell craft are kind of the same
but prayer can mainly be, or from what i know of it, simply a chant (aka prayer), while in spells, though some are just chants, most require added on stuff, such as materials and incense, so you can basically say spells are more of a devoted prayer then prayer
or have more put into them, something along that sense

spells and prayers are one and the same conciqently they are interpreted otherwise do to the image modern society(and older)
