My personal view is Modesty. I have gone through old Gypsy readings and found that it was done to show modesty.

Some Roma consider the part of a woman's body below the waist to be dirty because it is associated with menstruation. In many tribes, women wear long skirts, the bottoms of which must not touch a man other than her husband. In some tribes the women are considered so impure that they are not allowed to wash there clothes with their husbands or any other male.

Interesting information, but I do say that I will have to give up (or work on giving up) biting my nails. It's been a very bad habbit of mine for years.

I love to learn more about the gypsy culture In the Native American culture when the women have their montly they join the other women in what they call a Menstruation hut where stay for a couple days.
