as kitsune said, popular culture has lied to you. magic is energy, it can help you if you need some luck, or love, or revenge, so on. if you want an ice pillar, or to change your gender, or transform into an animal, it can't do that. as i said, it's unseen energy, it has limits.

well...if you want to make impossible things possible,you should try going to the astral world,im sure anything is possible there but it may take time to practice astral projection perfectly :)

You cannot physically. On the astral plane it is possible.

The spell you suggest is theoretically possible, but here is what you would probably need:

1)Enough water to create the pillar.
2)Enough energy to act as a catalyst to convert the water into ice.
3)The ability to concentrate hard and long enough to make it all work.

None of these are cheap. The energy alone would probably kill you if you attempted to use that much at once (you'd probably pass out first, though). Few, if any, people are capable of such a feat you wish to accomplish. I'm not saying it's impossible, but it's all but out of your reach.

Anyway no not "possible" threw magic but it kinda is threw science if you search around on youtube like "magic ice" or "magic water" I think It may pop up, however its just a chemical reaction not really "magic".

(P.s. I don't really think everyone should be using the word "impossible" so much, just because we've never done it or know anyone who has doesn't mean its really "impossible"...)
