Spells for beginers

I am new and have had about a years experence with magick. I was wondering what spells would be good for a beginer to practice and what usefull techniques that i should work on to get a good grounding in the magickal arts.

Before or after the basics?

Basics:

Meditation, visualization, grounding/centering, energy flow and control, shielding and circle casting, elements, days, colors, tools, moon phases.
After shielding it is more path and/or culture based.
