Red Ring Around Moon?

The night of Yule (also the night after the eclispse), my best friend and I were walking outside when she looked up and pointed out that there was an almost red ring around the moon. First it appereared rainbowish but then set in a deep misty red-orange. We both saw this without looking for it and I think I might have read asomething about his before too. It was basically a ring around the moon except for it wasn't touching the moon. Does anyone know anything about this and does it have anything to do with the winter solstice or Yule?

Thanks a bunch
Blessed BE

No it wasnt an eclipse. The winter solstice eclipse was the night before and looked way different. This waas just a full moon with a ring around it.

By the way a lunar eclipse hasn't happened on the Winter Solstice since the mid 1600's. It's a rare and beautifully breathtaking sight. I am really sorry that you did not get to experience the full power of this eclipse. I should have posted it):

That link is if the ring was large.

Smaller, closer rings usually indicate precipitation either coming, or recently passed.

Both can happen any time of the year and have no real magickal associations other than the beauty of it.

Rings around the moon are caused by the reflection of light caused by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere. If it had a reddish color it was due to some condition in the light being reflected.

Are you certain it was a ring around the moon? Could you have been seeing the Aurora Borealis instead? The Aurora can be any color from deep red to blue-gree.

Well, seeing as I am the friend she was talking about, I can assure you it is not that. But that isn't a bad suggestion.
The ring was rather large. At first glance it refracted into almost a rainbowy glow, then solidified into a vibrant orange/red. It was a perfect circle, only being deterred by the passing clouds. Believe me when I say it was beautiful. It was like a new and remarkable quality to the already entrancing moon.
Now, I did my research and found both a scientific answer and a spiritual answer. Scientifically, it is called a lunar Corona if anyone wants to look that up to see just what we are talking about. It happens due to exactly what the previous person said about the light refracting.
The Spiritual answer means simply weather is to come. Most likely rain. But in our immediate case, snow is more likely. Celtic-wise, it means that Faery's are active our are coming into this world, and that you must be weary.
This is not to be confused with a blood moon (a red appealingly blood covered moon), which in many faiths means the coming of tragedy.
I hoped this helped the curious of mind. :)
