How about this for a crazy thought, what if a the magick soceity breed together people that were born with a nack for magick and kept breeding the people who are best at magick together, I wonder how powerful a person they could breed. Any thoughts?
It comes from learning. Your family can have certain abilities that can be passed on by hereditary, but that said you don't necessarily gain the abilities your family has, nor do you necessarily have to have a 'bloodline' in order to have certain abilities. Some people are born with empathy, and some people develop it through practice. You can be born with it and develop it further as well.
Just would like to say that sitting down and 'breeding' a super witch is not only more than a bit silly, but also segregationist. Not only will you not be able to 'bred' a super witch, but it is also downright ignorant.

There seem to be too many people that base magick on Harry Potter and Charmed. And honestly I'm sick of seeing it. I believe it's time to get with the real world and stay away from your fantasy and imagination land just to see what is real and what is not.
Aren't you two being a little ignorant and silly, that you cant just entertain a THOUGHT (thoughts are not plans or actions) and magick has more to do with genetics then you think, just look at energy manipulation and magick as a science instead of "traditional" witchcraft speal, which i dont even pratice witchcraft or do I refer to it as witchcraft because i dont live in a fantasy world i theorize and look at the cold hard facts. So why dont you go back to your "school of wizardry" and stay there because obviously you havent brought anything helpful to this thread.

Now on the subject of the thread, I do not think that you really could 'breed' magic into a culture to the point of creating a 'powerful magician' so to speak. I doubt that genetics have a whole lot to do with witchcraft. It's like saying that people with christian parents automatically are christians. I do think, however, that if a child was raised from an infant with parents who had magical practices, and was taught the nature of magic from a young age, that child would learn much better than a child who began magic midway through his or her teens.

But enough with this back to the topic on hand, a psychic born person usually produces a psychic born offspring, and also someone can be norn with a nack for learning wouldnt that mean they were born with a nack for magick?

Now, onto the topic.
The thing is, many people are born without it genetically, or as far as they know without it genetically, and many people are born with it when they know for a fact that they couldn't have gotten it from their parents.
Yes, it is a possibility that whatever your mother has, you will have. However, like with everything else if you don't learn how to use it, it starts to fade away until eventually you lose that ability all together and maybe even forget you had it from the get go.
I don't think things are as genetic as you feel, that said, yes, there is a good possibility that you could try this and get some kind of results, may not be what you are looking for though.
I agree with Archea though. If you are raised with the mindset that magick is real and are taught about it and how to use it from birth then chances are you will know far more about it and have a better opportunity then others. This example would be like a rich family making sure their kid goes to the best schools rather than Billy Joe Bob down the street (not saying that magick is the be-all, end-all).
Also, I only called the idea silly and ignorant as that's what it comes off as. This is what I had in my head when I read the original post: 'breeding people like cattle to create the most powerful witch in the universe' then add a good long 'muahahaha' into the mix. Sorry, but that's just what my mind decided to jump to.
One thought... if your theory did take place, and a specific set of "magickal" folk did all the breeding to acquire an all powerful "mage" which is where I think you were going with this. Then over time I would think you'd end up with some serious inbreeding, then over more time having to pay off legislation to allow incest.
Now to me this would all in the end cause a lot genetic issues than if you just allow natural selection to do what it is well known for, which is keeping balance. ;)
