Disassociative Mirrors

So, an interesting trick that many do for giggles is to dim a room with a mirror in it, and stare into the reflection's eyes for an extended period. From a psychological perspective, the dimness of the room, paired with an odd hitch in human facial recognition will cause you to see an unfamiliar face...but in magic, mirrors are powerful things, according to a friend of mine. So, I'm inclined to wonder if perhaps, there is more to this than a simple error in facial recognition...

I've heard of that. You mean like Scrying? Where you gaze into a mirror or other reflective surface, you don't actually look at the reflection though you look past it if that makes sense.

Basically what happens is that your visual cortex needs new information. Getting so close to the same information for a long period makes it glitch in a sense, looking for new information -- almost like it (in the sense of a computer) senses that something is wrong, and visual stimuli must have changed by then. So it stops registering some things, starts doing a comparative analysis (accessing images of other faces to compare to what it sees, to make sure it's not seeing wrong), and so-on.
