Basic Herbs
By:
Okay, so, I'm wondering what some of the "basic" herbs are.
Like, if it was a starter pack, what would be the starter herbs?

Just please give me a list of basic and popular herbs used often.
(If you were wondering why, I was hoping to put a list in my BOS)

There are no real "basic" herbs, it is all dependant on what you need to use them for.

The best herbal guide book I have ever read is Scott Cunninghams - Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs. But you will have to splurge on a book.

Alternatively there is a herb section on this site that has and A-Z of the most common herbs in magickal practice and see if there is anything that particularly draws you to it.

Personally I use a lot of:

Sage, Marjoram, Lavender, Chamomile, Rose, Juniper, etc. But everyone is different.

It depends on what you're using the herbs for. Sage, rosemary, lavender, peppers, and salt are common starters because you probably already have them around your house. Learn the meanings of some of the herbs you're interested in, you don't want to use something like apricot pits (just an example) for a protection spell or potion.

When people say basic herbs this is what generally comes to mind:

-Sage
-Rosemary
-Basil
-Thyme
-Peppermint
-Lavender
-Spearmint
-Cinnamon

This is because with those common and easy to find herbs, you can cast just about anything. However, everyone views the idea of "basic herbs" differently. It depends on the witch and which ones they prefer to always keep around. Some might list chamomile, penny royal and lemongrass as must have basic herbs. Others might include comfrey, catnip and hyssop as basic. Then you have those who always have to have wormwood, sandalwood and myrrh on hand.

The best way to start a collection for magickal use is to check out your local health food store or metaphysical shop. They generally sell fresh dried herbs by the oz. Some metaphysical shops do sell "starter packs" but every store will have a different collection within it.
