2 1/2"+ Garnet obelisk

Hey All,
I have a question, I got this 2 1/2"+ Garnet obelisk and it didn't really look like what I expected ( a lot of white cracks on it) and it turns out it seems at least from how it looks to me to be more of a Almandine garnet and due to being rather new to this are they very different? I'm not sure what to do about this it was 12$ so I'm a little sad about it

Those white "cracks" are probably actually what's referred to as "inclusions", which is to say, the natural impurities which develop as the stone is still forming. An actual crack in a gem won't have a white appearance, so much as a sort of rainbow-esque sheen.

As far as whether it's almandine garnet or not, doesn't really mean anything. Almandine is simply the species of garnet. No matter what sort of garnet you get it will always be a species, usually almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular, and hessonite are the species we commonly refer to in the group garnet, in the reddish to orangeish shades, though there are green variants as well (andradite, uvarovite, and tsavorite.) Pyrope is one that most typically has the blatant white inclusions, in my experience. That one is more of a lighter red, almost looks like a cherry Jolly Rancher. Whereas almandite is a deep blood red. Regardless, whatever the species, I've never known that to have any impact on your use for the stone, aside from if it requires a very specific colour for your needs. I've never actually met anyone that factors the species of gem into account when considering their usage. So, whatever your reason for purchasing the obelisk, I'm sure it should suffice, regardless of species.
