Number on mail tab.

The previous thread about email notifications got me thinking.

Lark pointed out that the mail tab turns red when there are new messages, which is great. Unfortunately, this doesn't help anyone who may be blind and using a screen reader to access the site. A screen reader user has to activate the link and check to find out if there are any new messages in the inbox. While this technically works just fine, it's a waste of time if there are no new messages. Also, unless an effort is made to check every single time the site is visited, messages could be missed entirely and the sender might feel ignored.

With that in mind, could the number of new messages show up on the mail tab, or is there a technical reason why this hasn't been done?

Adding to this, could it be possible to sign up for notifications if we get a Mail?

I wonder if it could be less of a quantitative change, and more of a qualitative change: Having unread mail currently turns the text red. What if there were an easy way to [also] change "Mail," to, "New Mail," such that a user relying on a text reader would hear "new mail" as opposed to simply "mail." Or possibly, "unread mail," but the spirit of the idea is there either way.

Yep. Those sound easier to code and would work just fine too.
