I was looking for sites that sold crystals and I stumbled upon one that also sold fossils,that theyclaimed they had certificates for, to prove their verity.I thought it would be pretty interesting to work with something so old that probably hasincredible amounts of energy but at the same time,using it for witchcraft might be weird or wrong of me.I mean,the people who worked hard to dig them up probably hoped they'd end up in a museum or something like that and I don't want to disrespect their labor.The fossils were trilobites, ammonites(some of which were turned into table plateswhich I feel is kind of wasteful), fossilized lilies and sea stars and even megalodon teeth and meteorite pieces.I am pretty sure they must have quite a special energy to them.
I often wear and use fossils I've found at second hand shops. I'm giving an item a second chance and home. Keeping it from just going to waste.
When it comes to stones and fossils I like to try my best to find out if they are ethically sourced. Most aren't. For this reason I like to atleast purchase these things as local as possible to support the local economy.
If you wish to use fossils in your practice, simply show the proper respect. Perhaps a small prayer for the miners, whom worked so hard. A prayer to bring them better quality of life, and abundance.
Many kinds of fossils are actually very common and relatively easy to prospect. And not all fossils are museum quality, many are incomplete, small, weak in detail, or just plain don't provide any archaeological value beyond "loads of this critterlived here once".
Trilobytes and ammonites are both quite common fossils. My understanding of fossils is that in general, they all are useful for being representations of the past. They are particularly handy for past-life work, or connecting with the idea of primordial energies. If you want to connect with the origins or beginning state of something, fossils can be a good tool to use.
Outside of that, I would imagine that individual fossils can be good tools for connecting with specific energies based on what sort of animal the fossil came from. Fr example, fossilized shark tooth could tie in with energies of the hunt, and the nature of sharks in general.
Do a little studying on the nature of the animal that became the fossil, as you would a spirit animal. Learning about what is known regarding their environments and significance can lend insight to specific connections and/or why a particular specimen might have grabbed your attention
